This paper describes synthesis, characterisation and thermal behaviour
of five new dodeca-substituted macrocycles 6a-e. Comparison of the th
ermal properties of this class of pyrogallol-derived calix[4]arenes wi
th that of the corresponding mesogenic isomers 3a-g evidences the stro
ng influence of the macrocyclic core configuration on the liquid cryst
alline properties of calixarenes. The rccc-flattened cone configuratio
n is compatible with columnar mesophase formation, while the rctt-flat
tened partial cone is not.
