A ferrocenyl-substituted diphosphene has been synthesized and characte
rized, which seems to represent a borderline case concerning the dimer
ization of such species. Thus, the tetraphosphetane formed by dimeriza
tion readily undergoes cycloreversion to the initial diphosphene upon
heating in xylene solution.
