Abstract
We present a semi-empirical calculational procedure for the p(5)nl bou nd excited states of rare gas atoms based on the use of an LS-dependen t orbital for an excited nl electron outside a frozen Hartree-Fock p(5 ) core. The spin-orbit interaction is accounted for approximately usin g a localized Hartree potential. The contribution from the long-range core polarization is estimated by using a parametrized potential. A mo del potential is also introduced to represent partially the short-rang e multi-electron interactions for the p(5)np levels. The energy levels are calculated by diagonalizing the Hamiltonian matrix following an L S --> jl transformation. The calculated fine structure of the Ne p(5)n s, p(5)np, p(5)nd, and p(5)nf\(jl)KJ] levels are in close agreement wi th the observed level splittings. The transition probabilities are als o in agreement with earlier theoretical and experimental results.
