Abstract
This article presents a view of the world of automotive manufacturing, with a focus on the use of photonics-based systems to meet the demand s of an increasingly competitive industry. It summarizes a 46-page rep ort that the authors prepared for the Committee on Optical Science and Engineering, Working Group on Optics in Manufacturing, of the Nationa l Research Council.
