The inelastic particle production process in ultrarelativistic heavy i
on collision is modeled in terms of an effective scalar field produced
by the colliding objects. The logarithmic increase of the inelastic c
ross section with the incident energy is obtained. It is also shown th
at this increase is intimately related to the size and surface diffuse
ness of the colliding objects: the larger the size and surface diffuse
ness are, the earlier the increase of the cross section starts.
