P. Cuevas et G. Gimenezgallego, ANTIEPILEPTIC EFFECTS OF ACIDIC FIBROBLAST GROWTH-FACTOR EXAMINED IN KAINIC ACID-MEDIATED SEIZURES IN THE RAT, Neuroscience letters, 203(1), 1996, pp. 66-68
The possibility that exogenous recombinant human acidic fibroblast gro
wth factor (rhaFGF) may have anticonvulsant properties was investigate
d in a model of temporal lobe epilepsy in awake rats. We found that af
ter intraperitoneal injection of rhaFGF in kainic acid-treated rats, t
onic-clonic convulsions and mortality were decreased by 74% and 77%, r
espectively. These results are consistent with previous studies showin
g a neuroprotective effect of FGF against insults to the brain and sup
port a possible therapeutic role for FGF in the treatment of excitotox
ic processes.
