Sonographically guided aspiration of breast masses is a procedure that
is being used increasingly to obviate surgery through the aspiration
of nonsimple cysts.(1-3) This is an attractive option as a needle biop
sy is less invasive and less costly. We describe a case in which an as
piration resulted in the incorrect diagnosis of a solid mass, which le
d to the surgical biopsy of a benign cyst. In the present era of manag
ed care, the false-positive diagnosis of a solid mass was a costly mis
take. Awareness of this possibility may prevent similar misdiagnoses.
