Abstract
A method to determine the losses and the gain of a Q-switched four-lev el laser is presented. For an end-pumped system with an additional mea surement of relaxation oscillation frequencies the pumping-beam and la ser mode overlap can be determined. Since no resonator changes are nec essary, the measurement is very easy to perform. With losses, gain, an d overlap determined, everything is known to optimize the system.
