During the past decade, the educational level of young people in Franc
e has risen considerably. By comparing data from the 1982 and 1990 cen
suses, an analysis is made of whether the economy has absorbed these y
oung graduates and, if so, into which socioeconomic categories. The ar
gumentation takes as its basis a distinction between formal education
ending with a diploma and informal training based on experience. The c
ounterintuitive results raise questions about educational and training
policies.
