Abstract
More than 50 'Handy 1' robotic aids are now in use that enable some ha ndicapped people to feed themselves without assistance from a carer. T he benefits of this device include much greater control of the eating process by the user as well as the development of eating skills. The a rticle describes the genesis of this device and its subsequent develop ment and early evaluation.
