Improved synthetic methods are described for the synthesis of concave
receptor molecules. These receptors consist of a diphenylglycoluril un
it, flanked by two aromatic moieties. The most versatile synthetic met
hod consists of Lewis-acid-catalyzed reaction of a tetrakis(chlorometh
yl) derivative of diphenylglycoluril with the appropriate benzene or n
aphthalene derivative.
