Abstract
Juliana adstringens Schlecht is a herbal remedy in Mexican traditional medicine for the treatment of peptic ulcer. Our studies on its activi ty included gastric ulcers induced by several procedures in rats and c ysteamine-hydrochloride-induced gastric and duodenal ulcers in guinea pigs. The minimal oral effective plant dose is 30 mg/kg. The extract c aused a decrease in the total acid and pepsin output and an increase i n the carbohydrate/protein ratio, indicating increased mucine in the g astric secretion of rats.
