Methods are described for accurate calculations of the water solubilit
ies of sparingly-soluble salts derived from weak acids and/or bases, w
hen the known data are the solubility product and the ionization const
ants. Various cases are considered, with their possible extensions. Tw
o successive-substitution, always-converging algorithms are developed
for a rigorous treatment of some cases, for which also an approximate
treatment is proposed. For other cases, an interval-bisection algorith
m is suggested. Conditions under which the conventional formulae can b
e safely employed are established. Practical examples of calculations
are given and discussed.
