A circuit model for the coupling of externally generated electromagnet
ic fields to coplanar stripline interconnections with resistive and ge
ometric discontinuities on lossy integrated circuit substrates is pres
ented. The simplicity and fast speed of the model enable computer-aide
d analysis of externally induced electromagnetic noise in integrated c
ircuit interconnects to be carried out. A general CAD algorithm is dev
eloped based on this model, and is applied to realistic coplanar strip
interconnect line prototypes which are selected from a practical micr
owave integrated circuit. The effects of dielectric losses in the inte
grated circuit substrates and the discontinuities in the conducting tr
acks on the wave coupling are investigated in isolation.
