Abstract
The structural adjustment programmes designed by the IMF and the World Bank have had a devastating impact on the lives of the poorest people in countries of the South. Beverley Duckworth shows how the people wh o have the least resources and flexibility to adapt to the austerity o f adjustment, are the very ones who have been expected to shoulder the burden.
