Abstract
Models for the vibrations of a thin (axially loaded, damped) rail rest ing on sleepers are discussed with special reference to the distributi ons of eigenvalues arising as boundary conditions are changed, and als o to the parameter sets which produce oscillatory and nonoscillatory s olutions.
