The communication signals used by the weakly electric knife-fish, Eige
nmannia, consist of interruptions of its otherwise continuous, nearly
sinusoidal electric organ discharges (EODs). EOD interruptions consist
of a low-frequency component occurring during the EOD interruption an
d high-frequency transients occurring at the beginning and end of the
EOD interruption. These two components stimulate ampullary and tuberou
s electroreceptors, respectively.
