SHANCIOL, A DIHYDROPHENANTHROPYRAN FROM PLEIONE BULBOCODIOIDES

A novel dihydrophenanthropyran, shanciol was isolated from tubers of P leione bulbocodioides, together with the known compound bletilol B. Th e structure of the new compound was elucidated as y-11-methoxy-2-(4'-h ydroxy-3'-methoxy-phenyl)-3,4, 5,6-tetrahydro-4H-phenanthro [2,1-b]pyr an-8-ol on the basis of spectroscopic data and X-ray analysis. Further more, the absolute configurations of bletilol B were determined to be 11S and 12S by means of Horeau's partial resolution method and chemica l correlations.
