This article surveys recent developments in the separation and analysi
s of carbohydrates by high-performance liquid chromatography, in adsor
ption or partition modes, on polar sorbents with less polar eluents, a
technique that is now termed hydrophilic interaction chromatography.
A variety of chromatographic methods are included under this generic h
eading, the most important being adsorption chromatography on silica a
nd partition chromatography on silica-based sorbents bearing bonded po
lar phases. Examples are given of the applications of these stationary
phases, as well as the newer polymer-based polar sorbents, in high-pe
rformance liquid chromatography of carbohydrates and their derivatives
