Abstract
Design based, assumption free stereological techniques, which guarante e the accuracy of the estimates of such features as length, volume, su rface and number, have been used to show that Intra Uterine Growth Ret ardation (IUGR), which affects 20,000 pregnancies per year in the UK, appears to cause permanent stunting of the micro-anatomy of the kidney , lungs, brain and the phrenic nerve.
