Stygocyclopia balearica, a new genus and species of stygobiont pseudoc
yclopiid calanoid copepod is described from the Balearic Islands (Medi
terranean). It was restricted to anchihaline cave waters with saliniti
es of 18 parts per thousand or more. Its close relationship with Parac
yclopia FOSSHAGEN, from anchihaline caves on Bermuda suggests a possib
le tethyan relict distribution. This is the first record of the family
Pseudocyclopiidae SARS in Mediterranean waters.
