Molybdovanadaphosphoric compounds with Dawson structure were synthesiz
ed and used to hydroxylate phenol with hydrogen peroxide. The vibratio
nal spectroscopy and P-31 NMR were used to characterize their structur
es, The experimental results indicated that the heteropoly compounds w
ith Dawson structure were excellent catalysts for the hydroxylation of
phenol. A higher selectivity of single isomer can be obtained at the
higher molar ratio of phenol to hydrogen peroxide.
