Electrochemical reduction and oxidation of metal ions was shown to be
accompanied by the formation of a film on the electrode/electrolyte su
rface. The appearance of such a film which has mixed conductivity and
is formed by oxide-hydroxide compounds of respective metal means the f
ormation of a new self-organised electrode/film/electrolyte system. Ta
king into account properties of both the film and its position, this s
ystem is called as bifunctional electrical system since it behaves as
electrolyte in respect to electrode and as electrode to electrolyte.
