.This study examined adjustment, communication, and functional indepen
dence in younger (mean age 52 yrs) and older (mean age 73 yrs) individ
uals with laryngeal cancer, The results of this retrospective study of
male laryngeal cancer survivors (n = 124) revealed that older larynge
al cancer survivors were as well adjusted as younger laryngeal cancer
survivors, Seventy-eight percent of the subjects demonstrated good ove
rall adjustment to their cancer, Both age groups experienced similar d
egrees of communication apprehension and reported comparable numbers o
f communication problems, Similar abilities to perform activities of d
aily living were found between groups, Significant relationships exist
ed among the adjustment, communication, and functional independence sc
ales.
