Jp. Burke et al., EFFECT OF EXERCISE ON BONE-MINERAL METABOLISM IN DIABETES, Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association, 86(1), 1996, pp. 38-42
The authors attempt to assess the relationship between exercise, diabe
tes, and bone metabolism, An animal model system was developed to stud
y the relationship. Animals given streptozotocin to induce a type diab
etic state show elevated plasma glucose and triglyceride levels and a
decrease in body weight. Analysis of femurs revealed alterations in co
pper, phosphorus, and zinc levels in animals with diabetes compared wi
th controls. Mineral analysis of femurs from diabetic animals placed o
n an exercise regimen revealed values closer to control levels.
