Kt. Sreelathakumari et al., LIPID PEROXIDE METABOLISM IN OOPHORECTOMISED RATS, Indian journal of medical research. Section B: Biomedical research other than infectious diseases, 98, 1993, pp. 305-308
The effect of bilateral oophorectomy and the administration of beta-es
tradiol on lipid peroxide metabolism were studied in rats. The lipid p
eroxide levels were measured in the oophorectomised and the estradiol
administered animals. The level of lipid peroxide increased in the liv
er in oophorectomised animals, whereas no change was observed in the h
eart. The activity of antiperoxidative enzymes superoxide dismutase an
d catalase was found to be decreased in both the liver and the heart.
Oophorectomy resulted an the elevation of serum ceruloplasmin. Adminis
tration of estradiol to oophorectomised rats restored the altered lipi
d peroxide levels.
