In this paper, methods for measuring the quality of carbon anodes cons
umed ill the commercial production of aluminum are discussed. The elec
trical and mechanical qualities of these anodes are important for the
economic operation of the aluminum plant. While the investigation is o
ngoing, results from tests made al an aluminum reduction plant are inc
luded. The methods reviewed include direct resistivity measurement usi
ng core samples, ultrasonic measurement, the hammer method, analysis o
f the Hall effect, the four-probe method, ann use of magnetic coils (v
arious arrangements).
