Inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) is a rare subtype of breast cancer tr
aditionally associated with an extremely poor prognosis. The appearanc
e of the effected breast can be misleading, with the incorrect diagnos
is of an infective process, rather than a malignant disease, further d
elaying treatment. Compared with the results achieved by monotherapy w
ith either surgery, radiotherapy or chemotherapy; multimodality treatm
ents have achieved significant improvements in both disease-free and o
verall survival. The purpose of this article is to provide a comprehen
sive review of the current literature and highlight those areas where
potential advances in the overall management of IBC have been made.
