The Children, Youth, and Family Consortium at the University of Minnes
ota, founded in 1991, reflects the growing interest among faculty and
community professionals in nurturing a cross-disciplinary, community-b
ased program to serve the needs of Minnesota's children, youth, and fa
milies. This article is a case study of the Consortium and in it, we h
ighlight the early history of the enterprise, set out the guiding prin
ciples and mission that have fueled its development, summarize the fir
st 3 years of its operation, and discuss a few of the hurdles that hav
e been confronted during this formative period.
