This paper provides new insight into the dynamical response of an impa
cting driven beam. A simple mathematical model utilising a coefficient
of restitution rule captures qualitative (and limited quantitative) b
ehaviour of an experimental apparatus allowing the parameter space to
be divided into zones according to their behaviour type. Emphasis is d
irected towards identifying the zones which separate regular period-1
impacting solutions from irregular, apparently chaotic, impacting and
non-impacting motions.
