Bc. Kuypers et Mb. Alers, MAPPING THE INTERPERSONAL UNDERWORLD - A STUDY ON CENTRAL ROLES AND THEIR SCRIPTS IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF SELF-ANALYTIC GROUPS, Small group research, 27(1), 1996, pp. 3-32
This study focuses on development of self-analytic groups as a sequenc
e of specific social realities. Assuming that the ''cast'' (compositio
n) of a group is a determining factor in its actual enactment of this
sequence of social realities, the question arises whether group member
s, who performed specific central roles on the various ''stages'' of g
roup development, can be differentiated in terms of their ''role scrip
ts''. The theoretical model conceptually connecting stages, roles, and
scripts, is presented first. Discriminant analysis on questionnaire p
rofiles of 60 graduate students shows that the 4 hypothesized groups o
f (observed) actors (dependency leader disciplinarian, conciliator and
nonconformer) are indeed significantly different However, a solution
with 10 different types shows better results: shaper, isolate, weak si
bling, saboteur, organizer tyrant, hero, leader idol, and seducer as w
e labeled them Finally, as a heuristic attempt to generate more specif
ic hypotheses for future studies, compositions of the role scripts are
made.
