A dislocation in the vicinity of a crack changes the near tip stress f
ield (local field) of a crack. This effect is called dislocation shiel
ding. The change of the local field during a fatigue cycle is studied
for a mode I and III crack. It will be shown that the change of the gl
obal crack tip field determines the cyclic plastic deformation of the
crack tip and not the local field. Therefore the dislocation shielding
of fatigue cracks is an intrinsic mechanism and not an extrinsic one.
