Abstract
A formulation which uses Lagrange multipliers to ''smooth out'' discon tinuities in the stress field approximation at the joints of the bound ary elements, and which is in fact a hybrid formulation of the finite- element method [1, 2], is considered. The improvement to the a posteri ori estimate approximation is analysed.
