DISMANTLING AND DISPOSAL OF NIEDERAICHBAC H

The Niederaichbach Nuclear Power Station (KKN) is being dismantled and disposed of by the Noell GmbH, Wurzburg, and NIS Ingenieurgesellschaf t mbH, Hanau, consortium working on behalf of the Karlsruhe Research C enter. After all nuclear systems had been dismantled manually and remo tely, and the biological shield and adjacent activated structures had been removed, all remaining plant components were demonstrated to unde rrun the radiation limits specified. The Bavarian State Ministry for D evelopment and Environmental Affairs confirmed clearance of the site. The conventional demolition. going on at present will be concluded thi s year with the recultivation of the site. This is the first demonstra tion in Europe of the non-polluting, safe demolition of a nuclear powe r-plant up to the restoration of green field conditions.
