An efficient synthesis of 2,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde (1) from resorcino
l via the Vilsmeier-Haack reaction has been developed. Either phosphor
ous oxychloride/DMF or oxalyl chloride/DMF produces 1 in yields of 65-
75%. The intermediate formamidinium salts have been characterized.
