This paper reports on the results of liquid-phase mass transfer experi
ments carried-out in a bed of immobilized anaerobic sludge. The liquid
superficial velocity (v(s)) was found to deeply affect the liquid-pha
se volumetric mass transfer coefficient (k(s)a) in the v(s) range of 0
.007 to 0.075 cm.s(-1). Moreover, k(s)a increased exponentially with v
(s) in that range, due to the decrease of the external mass transfer r
esistance.
