The well known mixing length theory of convection is revised for times
shorter than the effective time of relaxation into diffusion. Using t
he Cattaneo equation for the heat flux, we show that the revised theor
y predicts, before relaxation, a convective flux which is quite differ
ent from the flux obtained with the Maxwell-Fourier law. Implications
of this result in the outcome of some astrophysical processes are comm
ented upon.
