Gh. Gudjonsson et Jf. Sigurdsson, THE RELATIONSHIP OF CONFABULATION TO THE MEMORY, INTELLIGENCE, SUGGESTIBILITY AND PERSONALITY OF PRISON-INMATES, Applied cognitive psychology, 10(1), 1996, pp. 85-92
This study investigates the relationship of confabulation to memory, i
ntelligence, suggestibility and personality, as measured by the Eysenc
k Personality Questionnaire and the Gough Socialisation Scale. The sub
jects were 255 Icelandic prison inmates. Confabulation was measured fr
om the memory narrative of the Gudjonsson Suggestibility Scale (GSS 1)
. The two components of confabulation-distortions and fabrications-wer
e scored and analysed separately. Distortions and fabrications correla
ted poorly with each other. Furthermore, the confabulation scores corr
elated very poorly with the other psychological variables. The only po
sitive correlations were a positive relationship with GSS Shift and a
negative relationship with intelligence.
