We describe a case of a novel soft tissue neoplasm, composed of a mono
tonous population of cells. Their cytoplasm was packed with mitochondr
ia, and had no immunohistochemical or ultrastructural evidence of diff
erentiation. The neoplasm, located within the thigh of a 50-year-old m
an, was well-circumscribed but unencapsulated. The patient was clinica
lly free of neoplasm at 1 year followup, after complete local excision
, We propose the term ''soft tissue oncocytoma'' for this lesion, beca
use of the similarity of this neoplasm to oncocytomas of other reporte
d sites. Copyright (C) 1996 by W.B. Saunders Company.
