Tandospirone is a new addition to the azapirone class of anxiolytics,
which may be useful for the long term treatment of anxiety and depress
ive neuroses. It is a serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine; 5-HT)(1A) recept
or agonist that has anxiolytic effects. Unlike benzodiazepines, the an
xiolytic and antidepressant effects of tandospirone can be separated f
rom the sedative, anticonvulsant and muscle relaxant effects. The abus
e potential of tandospirone appears to be lower than that of benzodiaz
epines. Tandospirone has anxiolytic effects similar to those of diazep
am in patients with various different neuroses.
