HARDWOOD SAWING TECHNOLOGY IN 5 TROPICAL COUNTRIES

In this study, hardwood sawing technology was identified in five tropi cal countries: Ghana, Brazil, Venezuela, Indonesia, and Malaysia. The density of the wood and presence of silica make it a challenge to saw many tropical hardwoods. The bandsaw is the most commonly used machine and is employed in many sizes and configurations. Sawblade parameters and operating procedures vary according to the nature of the species being sawn and are influenced as much by local custom as technical kno wledge of the process. The most commonly reported problems include poo r saw maintenance, lack of trained personnel, obsolete equipment, and inadequate sawtooth geometry and wear resistance.
