The structure of morpholinium 2,4-dinitrophenolate has been determined
by X-ray diffraction methods. The crystals are monoclinic, space grou
p P2(1)/c, with a = 9.902(2), b = 7.174(2), c = 17.578(3) Angstrom and
beta = 99.89 degrees; Z = 4; final R = 0.034 for 1203 independent ref
lections. The morpholinium and 2,4-dinitrophenolate moieties are linke
d by hydrogen bonds N(3)(+)-H(4) ... O(1)(-) of 2.723(3) Angstrom and
N(3)+-H(5) ... O(1)(-) of 2.752(3) Angstrom. The ionic character of th
e hydrogen bond was cofirmed by IR and UV spectra. Spectral characteri
stics of the complex are compared with related properties of 2,4-dinit
rophenolates of dimethyloamine, pyrrolidine and tetramethylammonium 2,
4-dinitrophenolate.
