Significant departures between theoretical predictions and experimenta
l results on Ar I line profiles in high electron density plasmas are p
resent in the literature. The purpose of this paper is to extend a pre
vious Stark calculation already well tested for hydrogen-like atom lin
es to the case of the 6965.43 Angstrom, Ar I line taking into account
the contribution of the interacting levels of like and unlike parentag
e. A comparison is made with the experimental profiles obtained in our
laboratory by flashtube electrical discharges with electron densities
in the range 5 x 10(17)-10(18) cm(-3) and temperatures from 16 500 to
18 700 K. This calculation gives a better agreement with the experime
ntal data than the previous theoretical predictions.
