Large-area, high-precision drift chambers, based on the ''jet cell'' c
oncept, have been developed for the muon spectrometer of the ATLAS exp
eriment at LHC. Emphasis is placed on the control and reduction of sys
tematic error in the drift measurement and in the mechanical construct
ion. Results of measurements on prototypes are given. These indicate t
hat a global precision of sigma less than or similar to 70 mu m is ach
ievable for large-area chambers.
