A microbore high-pertormance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method for t
he determination of acyclovir related compounds in drug raw materials,
capsules and injectables is described. The total amount of related co
mpounds did not exceed 0.72% in all test samples analysed by HPLC-UV.
On-line coupling with mass spectrometric detection (atmospheric-pressu
re chemical ionization, APCI) was used to confirm that the parent comp
ound corresponded to the principal peak in the chromatogram, and the m
ajor impurity present at levels of about 0.25-0.40% was identified as
guanine.
