The IRMPD of 2-bromo-2-chloro-1,1,1-trifluoroethane gives rise to an i
ntense visible light emission between 350 and 750 nm due to various ca
rbenes. The effect of various experimental parameters such as laser en
ergy, pulse duration and substrate pressure on the emission has been s
tudied. Infrared fluorescence studies have also been carried out to ex
plore the vibrational excitation of the photoproducts. A self-consiste
nt mechanism is proposed explaining the complex photodissociation dyna
mics of the system.
