K. Kimura et al., EFFECTS OF ALPHA-SUBSTITUENTS ON ION SELECTIVITY OF BIS(12-CROWN-4-METHYL) MALONATES AS NEUTRAL CARRIERS FOR SODIUM ION-SELECTIVE ELECTRODES, Analytical sciences, 12(1), 1996, pp. 67-70
The effects of alpha-substituents on sodium-ion selectivities of bis(1
2-crown-4-methyl) malonates, which are highly selective for sodium ion
s, were investigated by incorporating various substituents with high l
ipophilicity, bulkiness, polarity and back strain. The incorporation o
f geminal substituents such as long alkyl chains and benzyl groups int
o the alpha-position of the malonate was found to generally enhance th
e Na+ selectivity, especially against K+, of the bis(12-crown-4) deriv
atives. The alpha,alpha'-dibenzylmalonate derivative gave the best Na selectivity of all the bis(crown ether)s designed here.
