Described and depicted are the symbols of the hare in the window of th
e cathedral to Paderborn (Figs. 2 and 3) and in those of the former Ci
stercian monastery Hardehausen (Fig. 4), in the vaults of the cathedra
l church Sr. Paul in Munster (Fig. 6), and on the bell in the tower of
the monastic church in Haina (Fig. 8). These churches and monasteries
are located relatively close together in the northern and eastern par
r of Northrhine-Westphalia (Munster, Paderborn, Hardehausen) and in th
e northern part of Hesse (Haina). References to the use of the symbol
of the hare found in the available literature are presented in the tab
le. Interpretations of the symbolism as given in the literature are di
scussed.
