A variational principle for the scattering amplitude is applied to obt
ain a relationship, in the Fourier domain, between the scattering pote
ntial and the scattered held recorded over a measurement line outside
the potential. This relationship leads to a novel iterative reconstruc
tion algorithm for recovering the distribution of the index of refract
ion from measurements of the scattered field. The proposed technique u
ses and builds upon the well-known filtered backpropagation algorithm
of diffraction tomography. Computer simulations are presented that com
pare the reconstructions obtained with the proposed algorithm to the o
nes obtained with Born's approximation.
