AN UNUSUAL MINIMIZATION PRINCIPLE FOR PARABOLIC GRADIENT FLOWS

We show that for a general parabolic system, generated as the gradient Row of a rank-one convex energy functional, the energy at any time is less than or equal to the energy ''smoothly sampled'' at earlier time s. This generalizes the classical assertion that energy cannot increas e along flows.
